The project will engage two cohorts of youth and young adults... view more with training and resources to work as media activists committed to widening violence prevention from individual to community responsibility. With training in media design and production, ground-level prevention efforts, mediation, and behaviors that perpetuate gun violence, they will conduct campaigns in their own communities and on social media, where much of the gun violence originates and escalates. PCCD funds will be used to hire a full-time Manager, a Training Coordinator, and Consultant Specialists. Each youth participant will receive weekly stipends for 26 weeks. The project will train two cohorts of 15 youth (ages 14–24) to inform, inspire, and organize youth, to increase intolerance of gun violence and take action to prevent and diminish its occurrence. Every participant will persist in their education, and grow as skilled activists, creatives, and influencers who will reach thousands. They will also meet with prevention experts, media specialists, and decision-makers to gain meaningful input for their efforts and host an annual violence prevention conference. By engaging 2 of the same groups of youth over each of two years, the project allows time for youth to develop peer networks and achieve their goals. 1Hood will also provide mentors and ensure this experience coincides with their school-time and curricula.

The Coalition will also provide wraparound services and supports to address trauma, housing, education, transportation, grooming, childcare, financial stability, and conflict resolution. In addition, the Coalition will support coaching and mentorship initiatives, as well as monthly ‘Safe Streets’ engagement activities to open lines of communication with residents, connect with atrisk youth, and foster community ownership of 60th Street and surrounding areas. ACHIEVEability serves the areas of West Philadelphia, Haddington, Cobbs Creek, Carroll Park, Overbrook. ACHIEVEability is expanding its successful pilot - 60th Street Strong Coalition anti-gun violence initiative. This Coalition is a partnership of 60th Street Corridor business owners, community-based organizations, West Philly youth, and mentors with lived experience. This unique, community-based anti-violence program engages Black youth (14-26) through paid work experience, mentorship and wraparound services. This project is focused on West Philadelphia's Haddington and Cobbs Creek communities.

The Allegheny County Department of Human Services (ACDHS) is implementing the Rapid Employment and Development Initiative (READI) Chicago program model in Al... view morelegheny County across three geographic regions deeply affected by community violence. READI is an intensive 12-month initiative that connects people most highly impacted by violence with evidence-based interventions intended to decrease violence involvement, arrests, and recidivism among adult men facing high rates of arrests and victimizations. READI does this through engagement of those most at-risk, using subsidized transitional employment to incentivize participation, and connecting these young men with cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and skill-building/supportive services. Participants partake in transitional employment, CBT, and skill building/supportive services during a 3 9-5 workday structure, five days a week. ACDHS will work with partners in Sto-Rox (Focus On Renewal), Woodland Hills (Greater Valley Community Services), and South Pittsburgh (South Pittsburgh Coalition for Peace) and the model developer of READI (Heartland Alliance) to plan for, launch, and monitor READI in these high-need areas.

AFAHO will offer a safe-haven at its office location where 20 boys and young men from the ACIR communities will engage in academic tutoring and mentoring; counseling to build trust and understanding; life skills training; developing conflict resolution and de-escalation skills; how to function in a professional work environment and vocational training with tradesmen (general construction, auto mechanics, IT, and electrical) from the community who will serve as both mentors and teachers for their apprentices. It is anticipated that most of the young men and boys in the program will be those who are choosing to not pursue post-secondary educational opportunities and who are showing early signs of negative behavior and with the staff and contractors, the organization strives to build the missing village community (adults and elders who are genuinely interested in the success of these young men) that is absent for many in the program’s targeted demographic.
