The Trace Live: Safer Together 2026
September
All Day Event
Gun violence is often viewed as intractable, when in fact the evidence shows the opposite. Firearm homicides are down significantly and may reach a record low rate this year. New interventions are stopping potential mass shooters. State bans on assault-style rifles have been adopted south of the Mason Dixon Line. Yet those trends also underscore the challenges ahead. Suicides by gun are near an all-time high, and high-profile incidents of armed political violence have added to the strain on our democracy. Recent progress now needs to be sustained. The most stubborn parts of the problem need fresh thinking.
On September 22 in Washington, D.C., The Trace will host a series of timely conversations about the next frontiers for ending gun violence. Attendees of Safer Together 2026 will hear from policymakers, prevention strategists, scholars, journalists, and community leaders with unique insights on the issue. Building on lessons from our first in-depth event last fall, panels will explore what’s working, what’s getting in the way, and what can be done to save more lives.
